Linxia: Hezhou culture corridor between Lanzhou and the plateau

Carved niches on the red sandstone cliff at Bingling Temple, Linxia prefecture

Linxia (临夏), historically Hezhou (河州), sits southwest of Lanzhou on the way toward Gannan. For independent travellers it is less a “must-see postcard” than a culture and food corridor: Hui Muslim street life, green-tiled minarets, and a practical overnight or lunch stop before Xiahe. Nearby, the Yellow River gorge holds Bingling Temple grottoes — the photo many people pin when they say “Linxia.”

Bingling Temple day trip

Bingling Si (炳灵寺) grottoes sit on a sandstone cliff above a reservoir stretch of the Yellow River (Yongjing County, Linxia prefecture). The usual pattern is a boat ride from the Liujiaxia / reservoir area to the cliff — schedules depend on season, water level and weather.

Soft link to Labrang and Hexi

Think of Linxia as the hinge between river-city Lanzhou and highland Xiahe — not a substitute for either. For first-week route choice, read Hexi or Gannan first?. Entry rules for Gansu overall: visa & entry guide.
