Mogao Caves tickets: the 2026 guide for foreign visitors
The Mogao Caves are the reason many people come to Gansu, and the ticket system is the reason some of them leave without seeing it. There are no gate tickets, the daily Type A allocation is capped, and it is released a month in advance at a fixed hour. Miss the window and your options shrink to an emergency ticket with half the caves.
Ticket types and prices (2026)
| Ticket | Price | What you get | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type A (regular) | CNY 238 | 2 digital films at the exhibition centre + shuttle + 8 caves with guide | 6,000/day in peak season · released 30 days ahead |
| Type B (emergency) | CNY 100 | 4 caves with guide | Opens when demand is high; usually announced close to the date |
| Type C | CNY 50 | Digital films only, no caves | Rarely worth it on its own |
| Special caves | CNY 150–200 each | Individual decorated caves, separate guide | Bought on site, subject to conservation closures |
Peak season is 1 April to 30 November. Outside it, pressure drops sharply and the same caves are quieter and colder.
The 30-day clock
- Type A tickets are released 30 days in advance at 07:00 China time (UTC+8).
- At 6,000 tickets a day they typically clear in a few minutes, fastest for the 08:00–09:00 entry slots.
- There is no way to buy on the day at the gate. Plan the purchase for the morning that is exactly one month before your Dunhuang dates.
Where to actually buy them
One channel only: the official WeChat mini-program / service account 莫高窟参观预约网 ("Mogao Caves Reservation") and the website www.mgk.org.cn.
On 18 July 2026 the Dunhuang Academy issued a public statement naming resale platforms — including Xianyu, Meituan, Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Taobao, Fliggy and Kuaishou — as unauthorised, warning that such tickets may fail the ticket check and put your personal data at risk. The same applies to the big international activity platforms: what they sell around the caves is transport and guiding, and the cave entry itself is not theirs to sell.
Practical consequence: if a listing online promises "Mogao Caves entry guaranteed", treat it as a red flag rather than a service.
How the visit runs
- Arrive at the Mogao Caves Digital Exhibition Centre (near Dunhuang city) 30 minutes before your slot.
- Show the passport you booked with — tickets are real-name and the documents are checked against the booking.
- Two short films, then the shuttle bus to the cliff (around 15 km).
- You join a guided group; the caves you enter are assigned by the site that day, so do not count on a specific cave number.
- Photography inside the caves is restricted and flash is not allowed — assume cameras stay in your bag and ask staff at the centre if you are unsure. Tripods and selfie sticks are routinely refused at the bus.
English commentary / guide language
Cave visits run in guided groups after the digital films and shuttle. Commentary language follows what the site can staff that day — Chinese is the default; English (or other) groups are arranged when guides and visitor numbers allow, not as a guaranteed private booking on every ticket.
- Common on-site pattern: visitors who need English ask at the digital exhibition centre when checking in, or as staff direct groups. You may be merged into an English-speaking group if one is forming for your slot.
- How to ask: politely tell staff you need English commentary when you show your passport / booking. Have the request ready in simple Chinese if you can (“请问有英文讲解吗?”), but English is widely attempted at the centre.
- Type A vs language: Type A includes a guide for the cave circuit; it does not by itself promise an English-speaking guide every day. Treat language as an operational detail of the day’s roster.
- Authority: whatever the Dunhuang Academy / site announces for that session wins. Third-party “English guaranteed” listings that resell cave entry are still outside authorised channels — see above.
If Type A has sold out
- Type B emergency ticket (CNY 100, 4 caves). Watch the official channel in the days before; this is the realistic fallback and still worth doing.
- Yulin Caves (榆林窟), about 170 km east of Dunhuang near Guazhou — smaller, superb, and usually far less contested. Best done as a full-day drive.
- Western Thousand Buddha Caves (西千佛洞), closer to Dunhuang, a short visit that fits the same day as Mingsha.
- Add the Dunhuang Museum and the manuscript story at the night market district to fill the gap with context.
What to bring
- Passport (mandatory), booking confirmation on your phone, water, sun hat, a light layer — the cliff face is exposed and the desert swings between heat and wind.
- Cash or a working Alipay/WeChat Pay on your phone; set the payment apps up before you fly.
Costs and windows in the same trip
Most visitors pair the caves with Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake (the dune field at the edge of Dunhuang, camel rides and sand-sledding — Mingsha guide), the Yumen Pass and Yardang National Geopark on the western line, and the Shazhou night market. A private car for those days runs about CNY 566–1,000 depending on the route — far cheaper per person for two or more travellers than joining separate tours.
