Paying in Gansu: set up two apps before you fly, or carry cash like it is 2010
Almost every transaction in Gansu — noodle shops, cave tickets, taxis, temple entry, a bottle of water — happens through a QR code. Both major apps now accept foreign cards, and both charge nothing on small payments. The reason visitors get stuck is not the fee structure. It is doing the setup at a ticket window with bad signal, in Chinese.
Do this before you fly
- Alipay: install the international version, register with your home number, add your card, and complete identity verification. Test paying a small amount at home or at the airport.
- WeChat Pay: same drill. WeChat doubles as your messaging app in China, so you will want the account anyway.
- Didi: install the international version (in English) and bind the same foreign card. This is how you will get around Lanzhou and Dunhuang without negotiating.
- 12306 for trains, or Ctrip/Trip.com if 12306's identity check fights your document type.
- Offline maps: download your areas while your normal connection still works.
What the fees actually are
| Transaction | Fee | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Single payment CNY 200 or less | No international-card fee | Written into WeChat Pay's published international-card rules and mirrored by Alipay; this covers most food, transport and small tickets |
| Above CNY 200 | 3% of the transaction | Set out in WeChat Pay's official rule notice (posts.tenpay.com) |
| WeChat Pay, first-time foreign-card binder | Fee waived for 90 consecutive days from your first transaction, up to CNY 1,000 per day | Announced May 2026 and running for bindings made up to 31 December 2026; an earlier version of the same promotion ran for 60 days, so expect the terms to keep moving |
| Alipay annual ceiling with foreign cards | Commonly cited at USD 50,000 per year | Check the limit shown in your own app — limits differ by card and account |
The cost of this in practice
A CNY 238 Mogao Caves ticket paid by card app costs a few yuan more than the list price. A CNY 25 bowl of noodles costs exactly CNY 25. The relevant number for a week in the corridor is therefore not the fee — it is whether your setup works when you are standing at a kiosk with a queue behind you.
Where cash still rules
- Small village stalls and some rural taxi drivers.
- Temple and monastery donation boxes (bring small notes).
- Some family-run guesthouses and desert camps.
Carry a few hundred yuan in mixed notes. Foreign cards work at ATMs run by Bank of China and ICBC, and at the airports; outside the cities, plan ahead.
The connectivity question
Many international services are unreachable on Chinese mobile and hotel networks. Practical consequences for a Gansu trip:
- Do your messaging on WeChat, and tell people at home to expect WeChat or email from you.
- Your home SIM on roaming data often behaves differently from a local SIM or hotel wifi; test what you need before you rely on it.
- Download maps, tickets and your booking confirmations offline. Mobile signal in Yardang, on the western line and in parts of Gannan is patchy or absent.
- Keep a screenshot of your Mogao booking, your train number and your passport photo page.
Money questions we get asked
- Do I need to tip? No. Tipping is not expected in Gansu.
- Can I pay a private driver by card app? Yes, person-to-person transfer is normal — agree the day rate first, pay at the end.
- Are hotel deposits refundable? Usually authorised and released at checkout; a credit card is simpler than a debit card for this.
- Is it cheaper to bring USD and change it? Generally no. Card apps plus a small cash float is the practical setup.
The pre-trip setup checklist
Two apps, one map download, one screenshot folder. We send the dated version — including the booking windows that close before you land.
