Zhangye Danxia: how to see the Rainbow Mountains without seeing them badly
Zhangye's coloured hills are the single most photographed thing in Gansu, and most people photograph them at the worst possible hour — noon in July, from a shuttle queue. Get the timing and the platform order right and it is as good as the pictures. Get them wrong and it is a striped car park with crowds.
The essentials
| Entry | Listed from about CNY 93 including the internal shuttle (Chinese platforms, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Distance from Zhangye city | About 40 km, roughly 40–50 minutes by road |
| Opening hours | Scheduled by season and published by the park; in early September 2026 the site was listing entry from 05:30 for sunrise viewing and an earlier closing window of 06:30–18:00 in the shoulder period. Check zydanxia.com the day before you go. |
| Inside the park | No public driving. A shuttle loop stops at the numbered viewing platforms; you get off, look, photograph and re-board. |

Light is the whole game
- Best: the 60 minutes after sunrise and the 60 minutes before sunset — low angles make the bands glow.
- Best of all: the day after rain, when the rock is saturated and the colours are darkest. Dusty dry afternoons are the flattest.
- Worst: 11:00–15:00 in summer. Overhead light kills the contrast and that is when the coaches arrive.
- Practical: if you go for sunrise, confirm that day's first shuttle time — the entry window and the first shuttle are not always the same.
Platform strategy
The shuttle route is one directional, with stops at numbered platforms. Two workable plans:
- Sunrise: ride to the furthest platforms first while most visitors are still at the entrance, work back through the middle stops, and finish at the wide panorama platform as the light hardens.
- Sunset: do the middle platforms first, then commit to the highest, widest platform for the last hour. Do not start a platform you cannot finish before the shuttle slows down.
Wear shoes that grip: the platforms are boardwalk, but the sand and grit between them is slippery, and there is almost no shade anywhere in the park.
Getting there and back
- Taxi or day car from Zhangye: about 40–50 minutes each way. Agree the return — the car park is not full of waiting taxis at sunset, and phone signal at the far end is patchy.
- Seasonal tourist shuttle: runs from the city's bus station in the high season; ask at your hotel for the current schedule, as it changes by month.
- By train: Zhangye West is on the Lanzhou–Dunhuang corridor line, which makes Danxia an easy stop between Lanzhou and Jiayuguan.
If you have a second day — the quieter parks
- Binggou Danxia: a separate park in the same geological system, with castle-like formations rather than stripes, and a fraction of the crowds.
- Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon: red cliffs and a gorge walk about 56 km from the city; better for walking than for photography.
- Mati Temple: cliff-carved Buddhist halls an hour south — the most interesting non-landscape day trip from Zhangye.
- Giant Buddha Temple: in the city itself, and the reason to give Zhangye a night rather than a half day.
Practical warnings from the corridor
- Altitude is not a problem here — Zhangye sits around 1,500 m. The altitude warning applies to Gannan in the south.
- Carry water and a hat. The park has kiosks but queues at the main stop; the desert sun is unforgiving from April to September.
- Sandstorms in April and May can close the park or scrub visibility entirely. Build a buffer day if Danxia is the reason you are coming.
- Tickets: buy on arrival at the gate, or via Chinese mini-programs; foreign passports are handled at the ticket window, so allow a few extra minutes.
One email, the corridor's timing
When to book Mogao (30 days), when train seats open (15), and which month to pick for Gansu's desert light.
