What is actually worth buying in Gansu

Most souvenir shops in Dunhuang sell the same three things. Gansu has real craft traditions — inkstones, lacquer, sachets, metalware — and they are worth knowing before you spend money on a fridge magnet.

Jiuquan

Night-light cups (夜光杯)

Jade cups carved from Qilian nephrite, the craft named in the Tang poem about "luminous cups of grape wine". Judged by wall thickness and how evenly light passes through — not by how green it looks under shop lighting.

Zhuoni · Tao砚

Tao inkstones (洮砚)

One of China's four famous inkstones, cut from stone in the Tao River valley. The stone is green, dense and holds water; cheap "Tao" stones are usually carved from softer local rock.

Tianshui

Lacquerware (雕漆 / 漆器)

Layers of lacquer built up and carved back. The tell is the cross-section: dozens of thin coats, not one thick painted surface.

Qingyang

Sachets (香包)

Embroidered silk pouches filled with herbs, made for the Dragon Boat season. Hand-stitched edges versus glued ones is the whole price difference.

Dunhuang

Mogao-inspired design

The mural motifs (feitian, nine-coloured deer, caisson ceilings) are public-domain heritage, but specific modern artworks built on them are not. Buy from studios that credit their designers.

Lanzhou

Gourd carving (刻葫芦)

Micro-carving on tiny gourds — a genuine Lanzhou speciality, and one of the few crafts where the artist's name matters as much as the object.

How we will cover this

No shop, no affiliate links — yet

We are not opening a store until three things are true. Until then this section stays a guide, not a checkout.

01

Named workshops

Each craft page will name the workshop or co-operative and the city it is in. "Gansu craft" as a label is meaningless; a named maker is auditable.

02

Photos with permission

Product photos come from the maker, in writing. Stock photos of "Chinese crafts" mislead buyers and are the fastest way to lose trust — and to get a takedown.

03

Shipping that works

Ceramics, stone and lacquer need export packing and a carrier that handles breakage claims. Until a route is tested end-to-end, we will not take an order.

Buying well

Four questions that separate craft from souvenir

01

Who made it?

If the shop cannot name a workshop or an artist, it is a reseller of factory goods. That is not automatically bad — but the price should reflect it.

02

What is it made of?

Nephrite versus glass, Tao stone versus local shale, silk embroidery versus printed polyester. Ask for the material in writing; the difference is 10–50× in price.

03

Is it reproducible?

Hand-carved means two pieces never match exactly. Identical "handmade" items in a stack are moulded or printed.

04

Can it leave China?

Some materials (certain stones, animal products, antiques) need export paperwork. Ask before you buy, not at the airport.
