Hexi Corridor vs Gannan: which for a first trip

Last verified 31 October 2026 · Independent route advice · Not a tour operator

Two Gansus sit on the same map and almost no first-time trip has room for both. The Hexi Corridor is desert, caves, coloured hills and the Ming wall — a west-bound train line. Gannan is Tibetan plateau country south of Lanzhou — monasteries, grasslands and thin air. Pick one spine for your first week; add the other on a second trip.

Do not hard-pack Dunhuang and Gannan into one week. They sit on opposite sides of Lanzhou. A week that tries both means long backtracks, rushed monasteries and a tired cave visit. Give Hexi seven days, or give Gannan four or more — not both.

Permits and altitude

Gannan is not the Tibet Autonomous Region. The Tibet Travel Permit system for Lhasa / TAR does not apply to Xiahe, Labrang or ordinary Gannan travel inside Gansu. Monasteries can still close without notice for religious events — check close to your dates. Altitude around Labrang is about 3,200 m; grasslands and passes go higher. Ascend gently, drink water, keep day one easy. Details: Gannan · Xiahe · Labrang guide and the entry guide.
