Best time to visit Gansu and what to pack
Gansu spans desert corridor and highland plateau. “Best month” depends on which spine you chose — Hexi or Gannan — and how you pack for day–night swings.
Monthly windows (overview)
| Months | Hexi / Dunhuang | Gannan / Xiahe |
|---|---|---|
| Mar–Apr | Cooler desert, possible sand; quieter caves | Still cold; roads variable |
| May–Jun | Strong shoulder; longer light | Opening up; grasslands greening |
| Jul–Aug | Hottest days; book Mogao early; busy | Main grassland season; storms possible |
| Sep–Oct | Often ideal light and milder heat | Clear air; nights cold; early frost risk |
| Nov–Feb | Cold, fewer crowds; short days | Hard cold; Monlam possible — spectacular, harsh |
Peak Mogao pressure runs roughly April–November alongside the Type A daily cap — see the ticket guide.
Desert day–night swing
- Dunhuang and the corridor can feel hot at noon and sharp at night in the same 24 hours.
- Pack a sun hat, SPF, light long sleeves, and one warm layer for evenings and air-conditioned trains.
- Sand: scarf / buff, sealed bag for camera gear at Mingsha — Mingsha guide.
Gannan: add layers
- At ~3,200 m, UV is strong and evenings drop fast even in summer.
- Bring a fleece or light down, wind shell, and modest clothes for monastery halls — Labrang guide.
- Rain jacket for grassland storms; warm sleepwear if guesthouses run cool.
Connectivity (one line)
Assume you need a working China-capable data plan and payment apps set up before you fly — see paying in Gansu. VPN and messaging tools follow your own legal and device setup; we do not recommend specific bypass products.
