Lanzhou: Yellow River capital and the hub that starts most Gansu trips

Lanzhou (兰州) is Gansu’s provincial capital — a long river city squeezed between red hills, with the Yellow River running through the middle. Independent travellers rarely “do Lanzhou” as a multi-day sightseeing capital; they use it as the practical start point for two different Gansu stories: west into the Hexi Corridor toward Dunhuang, or south toward Linxia and the Gannan plateau. This page is an original English city note for that hub night — not a tour operator, and we do not sell tickets or packages.
Where it sits on a Gansu trip
- Hexi start: Lanzhou West railway station is the common launch pad for Zhangye → Jiayuguan → Dunhuang. See Lanzhou → Dunhuang transport and the Hexi Corridor story map.
- Gannan / Linxia corridor: south of the capital the road climbs via Linxia (Hezhou) toward Xiahe · Labrang at about 3,200 m. That spine is not the Hexi high-speed line.
- First-week choice: pick one spine, not both — Hexi or Gannan first? and the sample 7-day Silk Road itinerary.
- One night in Lanzhou is enough for most people: river walk, noodles, early train or coach. Two nights help if you land late at LHW or want hill viewpoints without packing the same afternoon as a long rail leg.
Yellow River & viewpoints
The postcard image is Zhongshan Bridge (中山桥) — the iron bridge over the Yellow River in the old city core. Walk the riverside paths at dusk; the water colour and the red hills behind the skyline are why people stop for photos even on a hub night.
- Baita Mountain (白塔山) north of the river: classic overlook toward the bridge and the long urban valley. Cable / path access and ticket windows change — verify on site.
- Jinchengguan (金城关) area along the north bank: rebuilt gate-and-street complex used as a culture / photo stop with river views. Treat opening hours and any indoor museums as local-day facts, not a fixed package.
- These are short urban stops, not full-day scenic parks. Stack them with noodles and an early Hexi departure rather than inventing a three-day Lanzhou circuit.
Food — Lanzhou beef noodles
Lanzhou beef noodles (兰州牛肉面) are the city’s everyday signature: clear broth, hand-pulled noodles in several widths, beef, chili oil, and fresh herbs. Shops open early; locals treat a bowl as breakfast or a quick meal, not a fine-dining event.
- Look for busy local counters rather than airport souvenirs alone. English menus are uneven; pointing at a noodle width usually works.
- We do not invent a fixed CNY price here — bowls vary by shop and year. Pay as posted; foreign-card Alipay / WeChat setup is covered in paying in Gansu.
- Halal (清真) shops are common in the city; confirm signage if that matters to you.
Hub logistics — airport, rail, onward links
- Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport (LHW): provincial air hub, roughly 70 km from the city centre, with a fast rail link toward Lanzhou West / the urban area. Buffer transfer time before same-day Hexi trains.
- Lanzhou West (兰州西): main high-speed station for the corridor west. City-centre stations exist for other services — check your ticket name carefully.
- Entry to Gansu: the province sits outside China’s 240-hour visa-free transit scheme; use the 30-day unilateral list, a visa, or a port-visa track where eligible — full note in the visa & entry guide.
- Onward reading: trains & flights west · route choice · Linxia · Labrang · 7-day sample.
