Jiayuguan Pass: fort, hanging wall and a half-day that fits the corridor
Jiayuguan is the western gate of the Ming Great Wall: a fort on the Gobi with mountains behind and desert ahead. On a Hexi trip it is usually a half-day stop between Zhangye and Dunhuang — not a multi-day base unless you love wall archaeology.
Half-day choices: fort, hanging wall, First Beacon
| Stop | Why go | Time sense |
|---|---|---|
| Jiayuguan Fort (关城) | The classic gate towers and courtyard — the postcard of the pass | Core half-day; start here |
| Overhanging / Hanging Great Wall (悬壁长城) | Wall climbing a ridge — better for photos and a short climb than the fort alone | Add if you have a car and 1–2 hours |
| First Beacon Tower (第一墩) | Beacon site toward the desert edge — atmosphere more than museums | Optional same afternoon with a driver |
With only a half day and no private car: prioritise the fort. With a driver between trains: fort + one of hanging wall or First Beacon is realistic; all three is a rush.
