Gansu spans desert corridor and highland plateau. “Best month” depends on which spine you chose — Hexi or Gannan — and how you pack for day–night swings.

Monthly windows (overview)

MonthsHexi / DunhuangGannan / Xiahe
Mar–AprCooler desert, possible sand; quieter cavesStill cold; roads variable
May–JunStrong shoulder; longer lightOpening up; grasslands greening
Jul–AugHottest days; book Mogao early; busyMain grassland season; storms possible
Sep–OctOften ideal light and milder heatClear air; nights cold; early frost risk
Nov–FebCold, fewer crowds; short daysHard cold; Monlam possible — spectacular, harsh

Peak Mogao pressure runs roughly April–November alongside the Type A daily cap — see the ticket guide.

In late autumn, desert dunes and Qilian foothills can share a dual-season frame — sand still warm-toned while higher slopes show winter edges. That light pairs well with a Mingsha sunset climb; see the Mingsha & Crescent guide.

Frequently asked

When is the best time to visit Hexi / Dunhuang?

May–June and September–October are strong for light and milder heat. July–August is hottest and busiest for Mogao. November–February is colder with fewer crowds and shorter days.

When is best for Gannan / Xiahe?

Grasslands open up from late spring; summer is the main season but nights stay cold at about 3,200 m. September–October brings clear air and early frost risk; winter is hard cold with possible Monlam spectacle.

What should I pack for the desert day–night swing?

Dunhuang and the corridor can feel hot at noon and sharp at night. Pack a sun hat, SPF, light long sleeves, one warm layer for evenings and trains, plus a scarf or buff for Mingsha sand.

What extra layers for Labrang / Gannan?

At ~3,200 m, UV is strong and evenings drop fast even in summer. Bring a fleece or light down, wind shell, modest clothes for monastery halls, a rain jacket for grassland storms, and warm sleepwear if guesthouses run cool.

Does Mogao’s peak season change when I should travel?

Peak Mogao pressure runs roughly April–November with the Type A daily cap released 30 days ahead. Shoulder months can still be excellent if you catch the booking window — see the Mogao ticket guide.
